{A Job To Do - Thursday, September 01, 2005}

Spend Sunday afternoon doing a sweeping job for an office renovation. Pay was alright- AUD$15 per hour. Freddy and I swept the floor for 4 hours and the simplicity of the job was so monotonous, was good in a way. For one, it gave me time to do some self-reflection and think through things which I usually brush buy casually and give it a deeper analysis. It also made me realize the value of money. Money is so easy to spend-especially if you are not the one earning it.

More importantly, nobody wants to be a sweeper for the rest of their life- or work a job which pays poorly or has no status. I recall reading in Maxim that about 70% of women are willing to pass on a guy who has a job of poor status. No guy wants that happening to them either.

While sweeping the floor, I recall words which Jun had said to me the night before and how her dad is strongly against her taking up a temp job. No, it's not because he's afraid that she would not be able to balance both because she's definitely capable of that. So what was the reason? She said that her dad told her, "You were born into this world not to serve people. It was for people to serve you."

I hope that some day I could say words like that to my kid. So how? Study hard lor... Exams are round the corner, while studying hard to excel in my work may not guarantee a lucrative career, it definitely boosts the chance doesn't it? So I guess it'd be something to keep in mind as I slog thru the night. =)
