I was watching the Phantom of the Opera movie which was directed by Joel Schumacher the other night. It was good because it refreshed my fading memory of the musical which i saw when i was only a little boy. I do have to say, the music was truly spectular and moving, pinning Andrew LLoyd Webber's name back up on my list of musical geniuses. While watching the movie, i managed to catch themes which i never took notice of before.
One of the themes, which i felt was pretty interesting, was one of which Christine, who loves the Phantom because of his mentor-ish presence on her, is having to choose between him or the dying Raoul. So basically, pretty-boy Raoul is getting owned and is about to die in the hands of mr phantom, and Christine, the woman (and we all know how fickle-minded women are =P), will have no more difficulty choosing who she wants to be with or love.
For all the Phantom of the Opera noobs who have no idea what im talking about, i took the trouble to draw out what the scene KINDA looked like. Don't blame me if my drawing sucks, just appreciate it or watch the damn movie to get a better idea. Well yea....Knock urself out....
Christine: "OMG HELP!!! OMG WHAT AM I GOING TO DO!!! does he prefer his fish fried or grilled?"
So what happens next? The Phantom decided to let it all go. He set Raoul free and Christine was free to leave with him. All this fighting...for nothing.... Then it all hit me. All this themes of love, desire, regret and hate hit me. It hit me in a way which is indescrible really. I cant tell if the feeling is one of a brick falling from 2 stories up and hitting u on the head or someone trying to kick ur foot because you said something stupid at the dinner table missing it but hitting a more sensitive part of your body instead.
It is said that if you really love something very much, set it free and if it loves you, it will come back to you. Obviously, Mr Phantom was thinking somewhere along those lines. He loved Christine, that is for sure. Christine did love him back too its obvious...so yea...no harm letting her go off with a handsome, rich man because she'll come back to you if she really loved the man behind the mask. Yea, I see it now.
WAKE UP UR IDEA LAH. Letting the one you love leave you, hoping he/she will return only happens in fairytales ( or Hollywood movies). The whole thought of it is something like striking ToTo and donating it all to charity and hoping that they will give u back some money when you're broke. Aint gonna happen. Dont count on it.
Then again, please dont get me wrong. I'm not saying that you should be an evil Mofo and kill off your competition (eventhough sometimes i do wish that the phantom killed raoul). What im really saying is, if you have something you love, hold onto it, treasure it like it will be ur last. Dont be prepared to give it all up because of you feel that you are inferior (like our dear Mr Mask). Sometimes things are worth fighting for...and love is one of them. Now, if only i could get my life sorted out... ....
